Abstract

This research is motivated by the existence of a masterpiece of medieval Quranic exegesis that employs distinctive medieval interpretive techniques to present the contents of the Quran. One of the notable exegeses from this era is Tafsir al-Baghawi. The original title of this work is Ma‘alim at-Tanzil. This research aims to examine the characteristics of Tafsir al-Baghawi in terms of the methods, approaches, and styles employed by al-Baghawi in interpreting the Quran. To analyze his interpretive techniques, the researcher employs a descriptive-analytical approach to explore the methodology of Tafsir al-Baghawi. The findings of this study reveal that this explanation is presented concisely. It utilizes the Tahlili method with a bil Mathur approach. From an analytical perspective, the exegesis predominantly reflects a linguistic (lughawi) tone, as most of the content in each surah highlights linguistic nuances. Additionally, every discussion is supported by hadiths, opinions of hadith scholars, experts in qira'at (Quranic recitation), and linguists. Social, political, and scholarly contexts also influence the interpretation. In terms of intellectual background, al-Baghawi was an expert in Quranic exegesis, hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). Therefore, it is not surprising that the interpretive nuances presented in his exegesis align with his social, political, and scholarly background.
